In today’s job market, with competition at an all time high for every opportunity, differentiation is critical. Differentiation is your ability to “differentiate” or—make yourself distinct—from all the other candidates.
There’s a lot of information on personal branding and that’s an important first step. A great blog on that topic comes from Michael Lynch. Check out the LinkedIn Group called Remarkable Personal Branding. You know you are unique and identifying your personal brand can help. For the job search, I suggest taking the concept to a higher level.
There are two places where you need to differentiate yourself: 1) in your application—so you get an interview, and 2) in the interview—so you get an offer. You ask, “How?” Many people confuse differentiation with their brand, which includes their skills and experience. However, the essence of differentiation is about your personal attributes, including how you manage information. Everyone is unique. We take your unique attributes and apply them to the specific problem that you will solve when you are hired for that position. Then, we take that one concept and express it clearly and succinctly on your resume and show you how to do the same in your interview.
